York County Libraries Break the Silen...Description
Public libraries in Kittery, York, Kennebunk, and Wells are partnering with Finding Our Voices to boldly break the silence during Domestic Abuse Awareness Month of October.
The Wells Public Library will be exhibiting the Finding Our Voices posters featuring the photo portraits of 45 Maine domestic abuse survivors aged 18 to 83 during the month of October. Accompanying posters will present details of the abuse they transcended that tie in personal experiences with the universal tactics that abusers use to get and maintain control of the intimate partners they claim to love.
Finding Our Voices is survivors of domestic abuse boldly breaking the silence of domestic abuse through bold public awareness as well as financial assistance and programs including dignified, pro bono dental care for Maine’s women and children survivors. Gathering and amplifying voices, the grassroots nonprofit galvanizes action toward more safety, rights, services, and justice for Maine women and children. The group was founded in 2021 by the photojournalist Patrisha McLean after worldwide headlines on the domestic violence arrest of her husband at the time Don “American Pie” McLean broke her own silence of 29 years.
